Families come in all shapes, sizes, and configurations—and that’s part of what makes being a portrait photographer in the Kootenays such a joy. Collaborating with people to create meaningful artwork that celebrates their lives and connections never gets old. Enter Kelly and Remedy, a partnership that deserves to be celebrated in a way that feels truly personal.
Remedy is, quite simply, a super dog. At 11 years old, she still carries the spunk and curiosity of a pup half her age. Her unmistakable “smile,” her expressive eyes, and her barely-contained enthusiasm made her a natural in front of the camera.
From the start, our goal was clear: to create a collection of portraits that would serve as daily reminders of Kelly’s deep connection with this remarkable animal—imagery that feels personal, and perfectly at home on her walls.
Kelly lives on a small hobby farm in a rural setting, and her home reflects that environment beautifully. Earthy, warm, and welcoming, it carries a quiet English pub charm—rich textures, cozy corners, with stories everywhere you look. With that in mind, we talked through how to create artwork that would not only celebrate Remedy, but also feel perfectly at home within the character and décor of Kelly’s space.
One key element Kelly hoped to incorporate was a local suspension bridge. Its clean lines and architectural details felt like a perfect visual match. Timing, however, was everything. To avoid harsh, distracting shadows, we needed either full cloud cover or very soft light. Since the weather is less than predictable, we opted for a pre-sunrise session—early, yes, but guaranteed to deliver beautiful, even light.
Wardrobe was the final piece of the puzzle. Neutral, earthy tones to echo the surroundings and interior palette, paired with a thoughtful pop of red in Kelly's shoes and Remedy's leash, added quiet nod to the inner spark of Kelly’s personality. Subtle, but unmistakably there.
The session itself unfolded effortlessly. Remedy charged down the bridge with enthusiasm before being swiftly (and lovingly) reeled back in by Kelly. Though visibly vibrating with anticipation, she (Remedy, that is) managed to sit still long enough for a few solo portraits. From there, we explored the bridge together, playing with both intimate close-ups and wider environmental imagery that told the full story of the space and their connection.
The result? A relaxed, joyful session and a set of portraits that feel as genuine and grounded as Kelly and Remedy themselves.
