What to Wear for Your Business Portrait

What to Wear for Your Business Portrait

Whether you are getting ready for a simple headshot or a full business branding photoshoot, think about the image you want to portray. Formal? Business casual? Classic? Boho?

For all genders, what you wear, how you do your hair and makeup, if you shave your beard or keep some stubble, the accessories you wear or props you hold all play a part in the story told by your photograph.

GET STARTED

First, think about the message you want to convey, then when choosing your clothing ask yourself if the outfit you are considering aligns with your intended message?

Begin selecting fabrics with solid colours or very subtle patterns that are in contrast to your skin tone and bring out your natural colouring. Fabrics with interesting textures or details add pizzazz.

Remember to dress from the bottom up. Even if you are only doing a headshot, your waistband may show and if your photographer does any sitting poses, your legs might show too.

WHAT COLOUR?

Neutral and muted tones work great for headshots and business portraits but you can add a brighter layer or accessory to add interest and catch the viewers' eye.

Accessories like scarves, ties, belts, and jewellery all help to add a splash of colour without being overwhelming. Make sure that those colours align with your brand.

Avoid bold patterns as they are distracting; and be careful with logos - ensure that only your company logo is visible and work with your photographer to ensure that the logo is placed strategically in the image.

LAYERS

Layers provide dimension and interest to a photograph. They also allow you to move comfortably and enable you to add and remove pieces to change the look.

SLEEVES

Go for sleeves and choose a length that most compliments your body type.

SHOES

Yes! Always bring a pair of shoes that compliments your outfit. Shoes inspire confidence, improve your posture and provide the finishing touch to full length poses.

EYEGLASSES

Avoid wearing lenses that darken in bright light. It makes it difficult to see your eyes and does not produce a pleasing photograph.

WIDE-BRIMMED HATS & BALLCAPS

Generally, avoid wearing hats with brims unless you have planned a creative photoshoot with your photographer utilizing headwear. Brims can hide your eyes and cast unwanted shadows on your face.

WHAT ABOUT THE TEAM?

Many companies have branding guidelines for photography that you can follow. If your photoshoot includes multiple people from your company these guidelines can be very useful. If you don't have guidelines, ensure that everyone is wearing clothing in the same colour palette and style. It doesn't have to be a "uniform", but a cohesive looks provides a sense of unity and professionalism.

SUM IT ALL UP

Lay out your clothing before the session to ensure all pieces look good together. If there is to be a group photograph, ensure that everyone's outfit blends well. Bring options to your photoshoot for a last minute switch up.

Last but not least, go for styles that best suit your personality, industry, and brand.
